All-NEW MemphisWeather.net coming soon!

Background

MemphisWeather.net began in 2003 as an expansion of a personal website ("Erik's Memphis Weather Page") that was designed primarily for friends and family to get local forecasts and other Memphis-centric weather information. With a brand established, word got out and the website visitor numbers grew - slowly most of the time, but by larger numbers during "big weather events." In 2007, the website was redesigned and a mobile version of the site was released a year later.

With the advent of social media in the late 2000's and launch of our first mobile app in 2011, the site's visibility was boosted across the greater Memphis metro. MWN, as it came to be called, continued a steady growth phase and the site itself grew as well, adding more pages and features. The framework of the main website and its mobile counterpart, however, did not change.

Upcoming changes

It has been 17 years since the last major refresh of the site as we sit at a bit of a crossroads. Mobile app development costs have increased significantly. Routine app updates are basically required to meet store specifications and remain compatible with device improvements and new features. However, the majority of us are using our phones for just about everything, so being "mobile friendly" remains vital. The main MWN website was built for full screen viewers (desktops/laptops), while the mobile site has remained fairly basic. Given a need for a flexible web presence, and also our desire to continue to invest in app development for StormWatch+ to serve a national audience, we made the choice to rebuild the MWN web experience to reach users with an array of content accessible on all platforms, while bidding farewell to the legacy MWN app. (More on that in a minute.)

MWN in 2024

The all-new "2024 version" of MemphisWeather.net (preview below) is very close to being released! So what can you expect from the new MWN? 
  • A completely new and modernized web layout, with distinct mobile and full-screen experiences, built on a single platform for ease of maintenance and upkeep.
  • A seamless integration of the MWN Blog, as the site is built on WordPress and all previous blog posts will be migrated to the new site.
  • All of the content you have come to expect from MWN, plus an expanded offering of products for the mobile user!
  • Opt-in "push notification" style messaging to keep you updated - on new content, approaching severe weather, or even maintenance events - in a proactive fashion.
  • New technology that allows you to drop MWN onto your phone's home screen, launching and interacting with it just like a mobile app, without requiring us to spend big bucks to develop standalone mobile apps. A win-win!

Returning to the legacy MWN mobile app, we are aware that it has fallen into a bit of disrepair of late, but unless we completely rebuild it to the latest requirements of the app stores, we were unable to just fix the little things. Therefore, with the release of the new website, the current MWN app will be removed from the app stores and no longer supported. (We'll provide easy steps to create the "app experience" you are used to with the new site, so stay tuned!)

Unfortunately, this change also means that the push notification-based severe weather alerts in the MWN app (StormWatch+ Alerts) will also no longer be available at some point in the near future. We know that a LOT of you rely on these alerts from the MWN app. Not to worry! We will be providing information on transitioning to our recently rebuilt StormWatch+ app with nationwide severe weather alerting, which offers enhanced features as compared to MWN alerts. More on this in the near future as well!

How you can support your trusted LOCAL weather source of 20 years

In a previous blog post, we outlined a series of changes that are in the works or recently completed in our organization. These include the addition of Richard as co-owner and meteorologist at Cirrus Weather Solutions, introducing new live streaming coverage via YouTube during inclement weather, and updates to the MWN and StormWatch+ apps. 

All of these changes - from new offerings to rebuilt apps and beyond - do not come without a cost. Operating MWN and StormWatch+ fulfills a passion Richard and I have to serve you and keep you safe, but also requires a great deal of commitment - of both time and financial resources - and it often interrupts daily life. (Our wives aren't exactly keen on us pulling from the household budget, while also breaking away from a family meal to "answer the weather bell"!) Our monthly expenses must continue to be maintained. Servers in the cloud that won't crash while pushing thousands of severe weather notifications aren't inexpensive. Neither is maintaining current versions of the tools we use to provide you the best possible forecasts and the most accurate severe weather updates. We also have plans for additional expansion that require a certain level of investment. 

That said, we have a couple of guiding principles that we refuse to violate:

1. We will NOT interrupt your access to potentially life-saving information with a paid advertisement.
2. We will NEVER sell your personal information in the name of profit (or even just to pay the bills). 

We are greatly appreciative of the amazing support you have offered over the years. It keeps us going when storms are bubbling at 2am and waking you up! But with only a couple of exceptions, nearly everything we have offered to this point has been without charge and without asking for anything in return, other than a referral to your friends and family. To be perfectly honest, we have stretched the dollars we receive, primarily through app purchases, a long way! 


So to that end, we are using this #901Day - a day in which "all things local" takes center stage - to announce the launch of our Patreon page. If you are not familiar with Patreon, it is a way to recognize the efforts of content creators of all types with small monthly donations. Think of it as a tip jar for great service. We're not looking to fund an MWN Owner's Cruise, nor are we going to take home a giant profit! We simply want to be able to continue to offer the reliable, trusted weather information you have come to appreciate, and also expand to a larger audience - with more tools at our disposal - to make the service even better. And we ask for your support in making this happen.

It's very easy to participate and we are intentionally making it very inexpensive as well. We will be able to recognize our donors in various ways (for those that choose), plus offer some perks for those who go a little above and beyond. All three "tiers" of support are less than you would spend for a single fast casual meal for one person! The point is, when many people band together to make seemingly insignificant contributions, great things can happen. We look forward to doing just that - using any donations you are kind enough to contribute to expand our offerings and to keep even more people safe and informed.

Changes ongoing and upcoming at MemphisWeather.net!

A lot has been going on behind the scenes this year for MemphisWeather.net. While most changes take place "under the hood," some will manifest themselves to our followers and friends over the coming few months. We thought it would be a good time to shine the light on a few of them:

Staff addition to Cirrus Weather

For at least a few years, I've been keeping my eyes open for the right person to help expand the MWN offerings, grow the brand, and honestly, take a bit of the load off once in a while, especially during active weather periods. In the fall of 2020, I brought on a friend and local meteorologist in a contracting role to write a few blog posts, cover inclement weather for MWN occasionally, and help maintain the StormWatch+ brand. The "trial period" was highly successful and this past spring, our business relationship was formalized. Meteorologist Richard Hoseney joined me as co-owner of Cirrus Weather Solutions, LLC!

Richard was born and raised in the Mid-South, and has always been a fan of the weather since getting involved with Storm Spotter training from the NWS here in Memphis.  He attended Mississippi State and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Meteorology in 2005, interning back in 2003 at FOX 13 with Jim Jaggers.  He chased some prominent hurricanes too! Richard was in Gulfport during Hurricane Katrina, in Orange (Texas) during Hurricane Rita, and in Pascagoula during Hurricane Ivan.  

After graduating, he met his wife who is originally from eastern Oklahoma.  They moved to Oklahoma where Richard worked at a locally-owned radio group as their staff meteorologist, covering everything from severe weather to ice storms to flooding, and formed a partnership with the county's Emergency Management in assisting the storm spotters during severe weather.  While in Oklahoma, Richard got into aviation, obtaining his private pilot certificate and his own plane. (And now he pilots #MWNDrone1 as well!)  In 2018, Richard and his wife moved back to the Mid-South after accepting a job as a meteorologist at FedEx.  He loves the Mid-South and enjoys forecasting the weather, especially severe weather. Richard has been actively working on several projects to improve the services offered by MWN over the past few months. You'll be seeing more of the fruits of his labor soon! Speaking of which...

MWN Live Streams

One of the projects Richard has taken on that we think you all will benefit greatly from is the addition of severe weather live streams via YouTube. We've been tweaking the software setup and training behind the scenes in order to begin offering you the opportunity to "look over our shoulder" and see detailed views of radar and other tools we use during severe weather. There will also be a live chat where you can ask us questions and get explanations on what you see out your window, or just over the horizon! We might even bring on one of our meteorology student interns at times to help out! 


Our goal is to enhance MWN's content in a way that provides real-time updates for the storms affecting YOU. We'll basically be making our hyperlocal, no-hype coverage more widely available - via your mobile device or even your smart TV! And it will be done with no ads, no fees, and no preempting your favorite shows. We'll let everyone know via our Facebook and Twitter feeds when we start a broadcast, but the best way to find out is to subscribe to our YouTube channel then click the bell for notifications when we go live! Be watching for a debut broadcast soon!

Changes to the Cirrus Weather app offerings

A significant shift has taken place over the past year in our mobile app sector. Most of you are aware that we offer two mobile apps - MemphisWeather.net and StormWatch+. These apps (including Android and iOS versions of each) have been the work of a single app developer since their inception over 10 years ago. Our "app guy" is unbelievably smart. He has shown his dedication to all of you for a decade and receives all of the credit for your ability to get your daily dose of MWN, and also to receive valuable severe weather alerts that ensure your safety and sanity. We are eternally grateful for his tireless and dedicated efforts. 

But maintaining what is effectively four apps was becoming a challenge, so we mutually agreed to move in new directions. Fortunately, after searching for just the right match, we are excited to have secured a new development firm based in our home state of Tennessee, Rise Above Creative! This transition will mean a change in our mobile app offerings though (which, to be honest, was the path we were headed down anyway).

The StormWatch+ app is currently being rebuilt from the ground up in an easier-to-maintain format. Once it is "re-launched" in a couple months, we will be integrating your trusted MWN content into the StormWatch+ app. This will simplify things for us significantly, while still allowing us to provide the most-used content from MWN in app form. In addition, you'll gain access to reliable nationwide weather information that some of you have been asking for in the MWN app, as well as maintaining the super-fast and pinpoint-accurate SW+ Alerts severe weather notifications that many of you already use in either the MWN or StormWatch+ apps. As always, all of this will be available without a single advertisement in the app and with a tight grip on your personal data!


We'll be communicating further as the transition time nears, but for right now, there is nothing you need to do. We look forward to a streamlined experience for our app users and getting all of the information you need in a one-stop shop!

"Destructive" severe thunderstorms to trigger wireless alerts

You are probably familiar with Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), the push notification-based alert you receive on your smartphone when a Tornado or Flash Flood Warning has been issued in your area. These alerts are defaulted on from the cell phone companies, but can be disabled in your phone's alert settings if you wish. They are triggered from cell towers to those within their broadcast area whenever the tower's coverage area (roughly) overlaps the weather-warned area. Thus, they are a little more precise than county-based alerts (like those from NOAA Weather Radio), but not quite as precise as a well-designed weather alert app that pinpoints your specific location.

Beginning Monday, August 2, the National Weather Service will make a nationwide change to "tag" Severe Thunderstorm Warnings into one of three categories based on expected impact. The highest of these alert levels will also be sent to smartphones via the WEA system. All three categories will continue to be called "Severe Thunderstorm Warnings," but there will be additional information in the warning as to their degree of severity. The three categories are:
1. Base (or baseline) - These warnings follow the existing criteria for a severe thunderstorm: 1.00 inch (quarter-sized) hail and/or 58 mph thunderstorm winds are expected. These are the lowest level of severe thunderstorm and are a threat to those not properly sheltered and will not trigger a WEA.

2. Considerable - Warnings tagged as having the potential to cause considerable damage are expected to contain at least 1.75 inch diameter (golf ball-sized) hail and/or 70 mph thunderstorm winds. These also will not trigger a WEA, but pose a higher level threat.

3. Destructive - Storms that pose a threat of destructive damage will be tagged as such and will trigger WEA alerts. The threshold for a destructive storm is at least 2.75 inch diameter (baseball-sized) hail and/or 80 mph thunderstorm winds. These storms are estimated to comprise less than 10% of all severe thunderstorms. Extra precaution is warranted (similar to actions taken during a Tornado Warning) given the level of damage they can cause - similar to a low-end tornado, particularly to weak structures.

So while additional alerts will be generated to your smart device, the number will be small and they will be high-end storms capable of significant damage. As a rough measure of their frequency, the NWS office in Memphis issued 223 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings in 2020. If ten percent of those were for "destructive" storms, that would be 22 warnings. And remember that is for all of west TN, north MS, east AR and the Missouri Bootheel! For your location, perhaps you could expect to receive ONE of these warnings per year. And remember that they are in essence based on your neighborhood - based on a cell tower location - not your county. This move by the National Weather Service and Federal Communications Commission is a good one and will hopefully draw more public attention to, and therefore result in a better rate of taking action, for the most destructive storms.

Reviewing the past decade at MemphisWeather.net

As we come to the end of the 2010's and get ready to start messing up the 3rd digit when we write or type the year 201 2020, I thought it might be interesting to take a look back at the last 10 years at MemphisWeather.net (MWN).

From weather website to trusted weather source

The past decade has witnessed a complete transformation of MWN. What was then (in 2009) a fairly primitive website providing some local weather information mainly for my family and friends (and their first, and maybe in a few cases second, order acquaintances) has now become a full-featured independent source of weather information for the eight-county Memphis metropolitan area reaching thousands of you routinely.

The rise of social media

It was in early 2009, now approaching 11 years ago, that MWN first appeared on Facebook and Twitter, just about a year after this blog was started. While those mediums have remained steadfast, others have come (hello IG!) and gone (sayonara Google+)! Social media has completely transformed our way of communicating with you! In fact, we're ending the decade with nearly 41,000 followers of MWN's Facebook and Twitter accounts alone!

Social media nowcasting

These social platforms are now the primary way of communicating our weather information to you and allow you to just hit "reply" to get your questions answered or comments seen! The dawn of the social media age also brought about our own rendition of "wall-to-wall" severe weather coverage, called nowcasting, to a hyper-local (Memphis-centric) audience. I am proud to say that MWN was one of the first in the nation to begin providing this "second screen" weather coverage nearly a decade ago! The model has been copied or borrowed in many forms and fashions successfully all across the country. Severe weather nowcasting on MWN social media platforms continues to this day for all severe and winter weather events that affect the Memphis metro! (We're working on a few more of those winter ones! :-) )

I've been able to keep the lamps trimmed and burning on the social media side thanks to the amazing work by a team of dedicated social media interns. Employing the assistance of a revolving team of (typically) Mississippi State University meteorology students, these young people learn the ropes of practical meteorological application in the social space as they hone their academic skills in the classroom, making for well-rounded meteorologist candidates upon graduation.


Several have moved right into broadcast, private or public sector weather positions with the skills they learned at MWN in their tool belt! I'm proud of each of them for their dedication to you all, as well as the promising futures each of them have individually in their chosen career path! Thank you to all current and former members of #TeamMWN! And #HailState!



MWN mobile application

Besides social media and the full-featured website that provides most of the information we disseminate, the MWN mobile app - first released early in 2011 - provides a one-stop shop for viewing all of our content, including the most popular products from our website (like the MWN Forecast and StormView Radar) as well as all of our social media feeds. It has also gone through multiple iterations with new features and updated designs along the way. The app has proven to be a great addition to the stable of services offered by MWN. I hope that all of you reading this have it on your phones at this point! (If not, click here to learn more and download!)



Launch of Cirrus Weather Solutions, LLC and StormWatch+

Also in about a month, on National Weatherperson's Day (February 5), Cirrus Weather Solutions, LLC will turn 10 years old! Cirrus operates as the umbrella organization for MWN, JacksonWeather.net (MWN's regional sister site covering the rest of west TN), and StormWatch+, the severe weather alerting tool built into the MWN mobile app and also available as its own national mobile application.

StormWatch+ was deployed initially eight years ago and has gone through multiple iterations since then. In fact, the latest upgrade to the national app, version 4.0, was just released to iOS users the day after Christmas and our first Android app to hit the national market is just around the corner! We've got big plans for our apps in 2020 that we're excited to announce in the near future!


Cirrus Weather also contracts with multiple outdoor events in the Memphis area for on-site weather consulting services that are collectively attended by well over 200,000 patrons each year. These venues have chosen to ensure their guests' safety and comfort by hiring a professional to monitor local weather and serve as the meteorological subject matter expert in the execution of their operational safety plans.

Comparing Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) and StormWatch+ Alerts

The wireless industry, Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) now disseminate Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) to cell phone users across the nation.  The National Weather Service (NWS) utilizes WEA to push select extreme weather bulletins using this platform.  WEA, also known as Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS) or Personal Localized Alerting Network (PLAN), is a national emergency alert system to send concise, text-like messages to users’ WEA-capable mobile devices.  Along with severe weather alerts, other messages that will be sent as Imminent Threat Alerts include natural disaster notices, such as in the event of an earthquake.  In addition to Imminent Threat Alerts, AMBER Alerts will be sent via WEA, as well as Presidential Alerts.

WEA Basics

  • Users are automatically enrolled in the program, but can opt out of all alerts except Presidential Alerts
  • Alerts will only be sent to WEA-capable devices (most phones released in the past few years)
  • Carriers representing more than 97% of cell phone users are represented
  • Mobile users are NOT charged to receive these messages
  • Message will appear similar to text messages, though they utilize more robust delivery technology than traditional text messages that is not susceptible to network congestion
  • Alerts will arrive on your device with a distinct tone and vibration which is different from a standard text message
  • Alert messages will be sent to those within a targeted area (individual cell towers can be programmed to send a specific alert), unlike text messages which are not location aware
  • Though the messages are targeted, your location is not "tracked." An alert to a particular area will be delivered to all capable devices within that area, regardless of where the device originates or it's "home" area (i.e., someone from Boston traveling in Dallas will receive any severe weather alerts for Dallas while he is in the affected area)
  • Messages will be limited to 90 characters (though an expansion is planned in early 2020)

  • Tsunami Warning
  • Tornado Warning
  • Extreme Wind Warning
  • Flash Flood Warning
  • Hurricane Warning
  • Typhoon Warning
  • Blizzard Warning
  • Ice Storm Warning

  • Dust Storm Warning




While this sounds like a direct (and free) competitor to Cirrus Weather Solutions, LLC's SW+ Alerts service, SW+ Alerts actually has several distinct and important advantages over the WEA system.  These are outlined below.

Meet StormWatch+, your NEW national weather app!


As many of our loyal readers know, a couple years ago we "un-bundled" the StormWatch+ severe weather alerting technology from the MemphisWeather.net brand and created a national iOS app called, aptly, StormWatch+. The centerpiece of the app was the push notification alerts, but it also included a basic radar display, local conditions, and the NWS forecast for the user's current location.

I'm proud to announce that the StormWatch+ app has been re-released as version 3.0 with an entirely redesigned interface for displaying both local and national weather information! It features a brand new radar display that is fast, smooth, and stretches from coast to coast, PLUS includes overlays like storm tracks, watches/warnings, severe weather outlooks from the Storm Prediction Center, and even global (yes, global!) satellite. Zoom out from street level to a nationwide view instantly, drop in satellite imagery and storm tracks, then hit loop. Within seconds you'll have the national picture in a smooth animation!

Not only did we start from scratch on the graphics, but you can now get current conditions and the National Weather Service pinpoint forecast for anywhere in the nation (not just your current location) by entering a city, ST or zip code in the location box. And we don't use computer model data that changes hourly and can't be trusted past three days for our forecasts - no way! Ask any meteorologist and they'll tell you that models are for use in preparing a forecast, not the forecast itself! First week of spring - snow, then warmer!

After weeks of above normal temperatures, spring officially begins with - what else - snow and Freeze Warnings! After an unusually warm winter, astronomists deem it spring and "the lost winter" shows up!


Today - cold and "snow"?

What may be the last gasp of winter arrives with accumulating snow on the northeastern seaboard and cold temperatures across the eastern U.S. An upper level low diving south across the region is responsible for our clouds and scattered showers this afternoon, while cold surface high pressure over the Plains and low pressure off the Atlantic coast combine to bring a gusty north wind and chilly temps to the Mid-South today.

A deep (strong) upper level low pressure system at 500mb (about 18,000') is located over northwest TN this afternoon, which is driving the formation of showers in the region. The degree of upper level "energy" is shown by the colors with strong values over the metro early this afternoon according to the GFS model.
Some of these showers are producing a mix of snow and graupel ("soft hail" or "snow pellets," or as I sometimes reference them as - "dippin dots"). Even though the temperatures at the surface are in the mid 40s to near 50, the freezing level is dropping below 2,000 feet and the temperatures at 5,000 feet are between 15-20° F. This is supportive of freezing precipitation aloft that simply doesn't have enough time to completely melt as it falls to the ground. All of this will end with sunset tonight and skies will clear.

Temperatures at about 2,500' are below freezing (blues) as shown by the GFS model valid at 1pm today. This is contributing to the mixed precipitation that is occurring at the surface. All precipitation at this level is snow.

Temperatures at 18,000' are very cold around the upper level low, approaching -35°C, according to the GFS model valid at mid-day.

Tonight - protect outdoor plants

High pressure moves east and will be over the Mid-South Monday, meaning a slightly warmer day, but a very cold start to spring break week for many school kids. Freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories warn of air cold enough to cause damage to some of the young plants that have started to grow already in the previously-mild March air. Many places in the outer suburbs of the metro - indeed much of the region outside the Memphis heat island and the MS/AR Delta - will see temperatures fall below freezing for a few hours early Monday morning. If you're worried about outdoor vegetation, tonight is a good night to offer them some protection from the cold with a blanket or other cover, or bring them in the garage or covered patio if possible.


Later this week - warming with a chance of thunder

By Tuesday, we'll be back in a more springlike pattern as wind turns southerly and becomes gusty and temperatures respond by climbing towards 70° under abundant sunshine. Wednesday will be similar with the morning chill a thing of the past and more clouds overhead as our next weather-maker approaches. Rain and probably some thunderstorms will be a good bet Thursday. The latest computer models that go out that far are making this system more "progressive," which means it moves through a little more quickly. In fact, most of the rain could be done by noon if the current model solutions are correct. That would limit the instability that comes with daytime heating this time of year so hopefully storms remain at bay.

StormWatch+ Re-Energized!

Tomorrow marks the roll-out of version 3.0 of our StormWatch+ national weather app. In work for several months, this version marks a significant improvement in the "front end" of the app, which admittedly had been lacking. While the severe weather push notification alerts are not being changed, pretty much everything else is. The result is what I am hoping will become a weather app of choice for nationwide use to get day-to-day, reliable weather information, including local radar, current conditions, and the general forecast.

We've gone to great things to ensure a beautiful, fast-loading, smooth radar display with precipitation typing and multiple layer selections that cover the entire nation, but also can be zoomed to your neighborhood (sorry, no screenshots ahead of tomorrow's release!). The forecasts are driven by the professionals at the National Weather Service, not a computer model that flip-flops 4 times a day or more. You know me - no crap apps here! NWS "point forecasts" are quality controlled by meteorologists in the the area that you request the forecast for.  In sum, we are hoping that StormWatch+ becomes #yourNEWweatherapp, especially for those outside the Memphis area, or for use by Mid-Southerners that travel and want a reliable app that will work nationwide.

StormWatch+ does not replace your MemphisWeather.net app for local use and you don't have to purchase StormWatch+ Alerts for push notifications from that app, as the MWN app has the same capability. However, it is free to download and removes the geographic boundaries that the MWN app applies. I hope many of our iPhone and iPad users will consider giving it a try! Unfortunately for Android users, it is currently only available for iOS, but we hope that its success will lead us to develop an Android version! You can download StormWatch+ here and then get the free upgrade to version 3.0 tomorrow when it is released. I think you'll like the great improvement you see! Check it out!

A new meaning for the term "crap app"... or a 59% chance of bird droppings

I've ranted before on the uselessness of "crap apps" and that ALL weather is local, therefore your weather information sources should also be as local as possible. A classic example was placed in my lap last night.

As many of you know, MemphisWeather.net is the official weather partner of the Memphis Redbirds. So it goes without saying that I communicate with them (the head groundskeeper in particular) regularly on details of the forecast and, even more often, short-term trends during inclement weather. Last night, as the Birds were chewing up and spitting out the Nashville Sounds on a warm night with fair skies and a 0% chance of rain, I was sent the following screenshot of the hourly forecast on a national weather app by the groundskeeper:


Being a prudent and thorough groundskeeper, he is apt to check multiple sources of weather information, even on calm nights. When he came across the forecast above, with its elevated rain chances, he checked radar and noticed an echo over downtown. With a forecast of rain from that app (I don't mind calling it out - The Weather Channel) and the radar image with an "echo" on it, plus the knowledge that it wasn't supposed to rain, he reached out to me. I then grabbed the screenshot below from RadarScope.

I was obviously cynical, but also curious, so I did some additional radar interrogation, including looking at one of the new dual-polarization products (correlation coefficient, or CC) shown in the right panel below. It shows blue colors co-located with the reflectivity returns on the left indicating SOMETHING present in the air. The bright blue colors are low CC values, meaning it was NOT precipitation being detected. The objects being detected were non-uniform in shape/size.

I returned a message to the groundskeeper, assuring him there was still a 0% chance of rain and that his national app was wrong (surprise, surprise). To me, it appeared that the radar was picking up on waterfowl returning to roost for the night on the banks of the river near downtown. I have seen this before (on a repeating basis in fact) just before sunset in roughly the same place. I believe Mud Island is a favorite "home" overnight for birds and have had some corroboration of that fact from downtown residents in the past.

What is the chance that these birds are detected by Doppler radar? About 59% apparently.

So what to make of the crap app with the 59% chance of rain? Most national apps use a single computer model for their forecast, which results in not only a POOR forecast when the model isn't performing well, but one that is also very inconsistent, often changing several times a day.

In the case of The Weather Channel app, I understand that it is a little  more sophisticated and actually performs slightly better than the typical national app. So what do I THINK happened? Though I can't prove it, I believe that TWC's app picked up on the radar echoes around downtown and "smartly" adjusted the rain chances for the first couple of hours of the forecast! If this was indeed birds that tripped the app up, it gives a whole new meaning to the term "crap app."


By the way, as opposed to the crap app, I never changed my forecast from the original 0% chance of rain. That's the difference between using a national app and shopping local. MemphisWeather.net's app and the forecast contained therein are HUMAN-POWERED.  I write the forecast, using all available model data, plus intuition, local knowledge and experience. Most of the time, that will result in a much more accurate product and one that is definitely more consistent. I think that's worth far more than the $0.99 I charge for it. Why does the forecast on my weather app always seem to be wrong?

I've been asked this, or a variation of it, many times so I figured I would unravel the mystery behind the forecast data on most weather-related mobile apps/websites (from here on I'll just refer to them as apps).

Two categories of forecasts

Forecasts that you see in weather apps basically fall into one of two categories: those that are manually produced (typically by a meteorologist who works in the area the forecast is for) and those that are automated.  Most national apps, such as those produced by huge news and weather companies like Yahoo! and The Weather Channel among others, fall into the latter category.  In fact, there are now also companies that mass-produce "local" weather apps that are nothing more than a template with automated forecasts.

A range of blended forecasts

There are also a few "in-between-ers" that have local forecasts that are slightly-tailored versions of an automated forecast.  In the forecasting world, we have terms for these 'tweeners depending on how much tailoring is done.  A "human over the loop" forecast is one in which a meteorologist (or many times just a data quality checker) monitors the forecasts produced but only edits them if they are grossly in error, usually due to a computer error of some sort, not because the automated forecast is wrong. A "human in the loop" forecast is one in which the meteorologist (typically) monitors the automated forecast but modifies or edits it based on meteorological reasoning. In other words, in these 'tweener forecasts, automation produces the forecasts, but the output is quality checked for obvious computer errors or meteorological reasoning.  We consider "human in the loop" forecasts of generally acceptable quality, while "human over the loop" and strictly automated forecasts to be of unacceptable quality.


Automation and forecast models

In all but those manually generated, automation plays a significant role in the mass production of local forecasts.  The automated forecasts are produced by weather computer models - often the same models that meteorologists use to prepare their forecasts. So why is that bad?  It's not always. But the forecasts typically get worse the farther into the future you're looking.  This is mainly because there are so many variables that can change even a little bit that could set off a completely different set of outcomes.  (Think of the pebble that is dropped in a tranquil lake in which the ripples expand out from the center, or the butterfly effect in which a tiny wind current is disturbed, triggering a series of events downstream).

First a short background: there are MANY computer models available that could be used to produce a forecast. The ones that go farthest out (past 3-5 days) are generally global models (they produce data for the whole world) and are run 2-4 times a day and typically produce data at 3-6 hours intervals. In the short-term (0-3 days), there are many more options, they  can be run anywhere from hourly to every 6 hours, and many times produce forecast data at 1-3 hour intervals.  When a meteorologist talks about a "run" of a particular model, he/she is referring to the time that the model initialized, which for most models, except the high-resolution short-term models, is 00Z, 06Z 12Z, or 18Z (or 6am, noon, 6pm, or midnight CST).  So for each computer model of this type there are 4 "forecast runs" produced each day and each can vary (sometimes widely) from the previous run - even for the same model!

Model output example

Let's take the example of Halloween night (6 1/2 days out from this writing).  A fairly significant storm system is expected to be in the area mid-week, so it's a good example (and pertinent since many people's plans will depend on the forecast).  The model output below was produced by two different computer models (the U.S.-based GFS and U.K.-based European model) and three different runs (2 from the European and 1 from the GFS).  They all show precipitation accumulation over the preceding 6 hours leading up to the valid times shown.  Commentary on each is below the graphic.  (All graphics courtesy of WeatherBell - click any image to enlarge it.)


The European (Euro) model is only run twice a day so we start with yesterday morning's run.  It shows rain, not heavy but an organized area, moving through Memphis Halloween afternoon/evening.  Enough to mess up some costumes!  If your weather app is based on this model, it tells you your trick-or-treaters will get wet.


The next run of the Euro, from last night, shows the weather system a little wetter, but also slower.  The chances of getting wet in Memphis Halloween night are pretty good (remember this precip accumulation ends at 7pm, so we would presume - correctly - that the heavier rain would be directly over Memphis after 7pm). Your Euro-based weather app though might indicate only a "chance of rain" Wednesday, because most of it falls after 7pm that night. 


Shifting to last night's overnight run of the GFS model (which is produced 4 times a day), the above graphic is the precip expected Thursday afternoon and early evening.  Obviously it shows the weather system well east of Memphis.  A dry evening for trick-or-treating!  (We could also assume it would be cooler than the Euro model shows since the front pushing the precip has moved through versus the Euro which would have the cold front still to our west.)  Your weather app says rain chances are zero!


Finally, we look at the same GFS run as above, but the scenario on Wednesday evening (24 hours earlier and the night the Tigers take on Cincinnati on national TV at the Liberty Bowl). Compare that image to the Euro images above. It looks like almost the same solution, only 24 hours earlier!  The two models are handling the same system in a similar manner, only the Euro is about a day later than the GFS!

[Caveat: European data is rarely used for weather apps, but the point is the same.  Different models can and often do have vastly different results.]

Crap apps -- garbage in, garbage out

Automated forecast apps are captive to one particular forecast model and will change every time the model runs and produces new output (up to 4 times a day).  If the computer model has a good handle on the forecast, they can be very accurate.  If the model is wrong ("garbage in"), the output is "garbage out."  The farther into the future you look, the more likely you are to see wildly-varying forecast and forecasts that are just plain wrong.  These automated forecasts come from what a noted Birmingham broadcast meteorologist calls "crap apps" and I completely agree.  No skill, no human intervention, just a pile of manure!

Automated forecasts can do a decent job, especially in the first day or two of a forecast, but also rarely provide any level of detail.  "40% chance of t'storms" with a cloud/lightning icon doesn't tell you whether your morning soccer game, or afternoon outdoor chores, or evening outing will get wet!

How Cirrus-produced forecasts differ

The most accurate forecasts tend to be those that are locally-produced and manually-generated by a degreed meteorologist that knows the area he/she is forecasting for like the back of their hand.  It is also preferable that he/she has forecasted for the region (as well as verified forecasts against actual conditions) for a number of years.

The forecast you will find in mobile apps produced by Cirrus Weather Solutions (MemphisWeather.net and StormWatch+) are of two varieties, and neither are automated.  First, MemphisWeather.net's "MWN Forecast" meets the above criteria - hand-written by a degreed meteorologist (ME) that has been in the same area for a number of years (27) and verified years of forecasts against actual conditions.  The forecasts that appear on StormWatch+ are all produced by National Weather Service meteorologists in the local area that the forecasts are generated for.  No haphazard computer models that change run to run or are way off base.

The benefit of a forecast generated by a qualified meteorologist is that that person can look at ALL of the model data (not just one as in an automated crap app), use their training and skills, and produce a forecast that is a blend of data that is more realistic than any one model.  When searching for just the right weather app from a forecast standpoint, know the source, and more importantly TRUST the source.  If it costs a small amount to get the opinion of a trusted source over a free, mass-produced automated forecast, you're probably much better off in the long run!
