Severe Weather Awareness 2018: Severe Thunderstorms

There are approximately 2,000 thunderstorms in progress around the world at any given time. Most of these storms are beneficial and bring needed rain. Only a small fraction, less than one percent, are classified as severe. Severe thunderstorms are those thunderstorms that produce hail one inch in diameter or larger or strong wind gusts of 58 mph or greater. Hail that is one inch in diameter is about the size of a quarter. A small fraction of these thunderstorms produce tornadoes. All thunderstorms are capable of producing deadly lightning. The heavy rains or the lightning activity in a thunderstorm do not have anything to do with a thunderstorm being classified as severe. Some of the severe thunderstorms safety rules are as follows:
  • Find shelter immediately. Go to a sturdy building that will withstand high winds. Avoid electrical appliances and telephones.
  • It would be a good idea to bring your car inside a garage and to secure loose objects.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means that conditions are right for severe thunderstorms to develop, but none have been observed. People should keep an eye on the sky and listen to commercial broadcasts or NOAA Weather Radio for any subsequent warnings.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning means that a severe thunderstorm is occurring. The severe thunderstorm has been detected by Doppler radar, or reported to the National Weather Service by our Skywarn Spotter Network, or the local law enforcement agency in a particular county.


When a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued for your location, treat it the same as you would a Tornado Warning. Severe thunderstorms can produce damaging winds, large hail, and deadly lightning and will occasionally produce a tornado, particularly in very strong squall lines, where a brief tornado can occur with little notice.

Severe Weather Awareness 2018: Tornado Safety

Tornadoes are violent columns of rotating air that are produced by severe thunderstorms.  Weak tornadoes produce wind of  65-85 mph, while the strongest (such as the Moore, OK tornado of May 2013), produce wind well over 200 mph and can be a mile wide or larger (the El Reno, OK tornado of May 2013 is the widest on record at 2.6 miles!). Not all severe thunderstorms produce tornadoes, only a small fraction do, but people should be alert for the possibility if and when a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued and take action when a Tornado Warning is issued for their location.

Tornado safety rules include:
  • At home or in small buildings, go to the basement or storm shelter, or to a windowless interior room such as a closet or bathroom on the lowest level.  Get under something sturdy such as a table or heavy bed.
  • Abandon mobile homes and vehicles for a sturdy structure. If there is no such structure nearby, lie flat in a ditch, ravine, gully, culvert, or a low spot with your arms and hands shielding your head, staying mindful of possible flooding as well.
  • In large buildings such as at school, shopping centers, hospitals, or factories/warehouses, go to the predesignated shelter area. Interior hallways on the lowest floor are best. Stay out of areas with high roofs or large roof spans, as they typically offer little to no protection from tornadic wind due to weakly supported roofs.
  • At school, children should follow the safety procedures established by school officials. These should include avoidance of areas with high roof spans and glass exposed to the exterior of the school. Children should crouch down next to a wall or under desks or tables and cover the head and neck with their hands.
  • At all times, avoid windows or large panes of glass.
  • If outside and sturdy structures are not available, try to drive to the nearest sturdy structure for shelter.  If one is not available, lie down in an area that is lower than surrounding areas (ditch or ravine if possible) with arms/hands shielding your head (being mindful of potential flash flooding).
  • When taking cover, have shoes on, photo ID on your person, cell phone (preferably charged in advance) with you, and crouch down and protect the back of your neck with your arms and hands.

A Tornado Watch, typically issued for a large area such as several counties, means that conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms that can produce tornadoes. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio, commercial TV or radio, and other trusted sources for warnings and watch the sky for the possibility of developing severe weather.  Have your plan ready should a warning be issued and be ready to exercise that plan on a moment's notice.

A Tornado Warning, typically issued for a small area in the path of a storm, means that Doppler Radar has indicated the likelihood of a tornado or a tornado has been sighted by spotters or law enforcement.  If you are in the path of the storm (sometimes called "in the polygon" due to the shape of the warnings that are drawn by the NWS), immediately find shelter using the rules above.

A Tornado Emergency is not a warning type, but is issued (usually following the original Tornado Warning) when a large and destructive tornado has been confirmed and is moving into a populated area.  The risk of destruction and fatalities is high and an elevated call-to-action is required.  Everyone in the storm's path should immediately take action.

Heat Safety: A Complete Guide from MWN

Many Memphians are aware of, or experienced, the record-breaking heat of the summer of 1980, even though it was 35 years ago this summer. The longest streak of 90-degree temperatures in Memphis recorded history was July 25-September 16, 1980 (54 days). Just prior to that, the longest recorded streak of 100-degree days occurred, a 15-day stretch from July 6-20, 1980, including the all-time record high of 108°F set on July 13, 1980. Eight July days still have high temperature records set that year and 12 July days have maximum low temperature records, all of them at or above 82°F (Source: http://www.memphisweather.net/alltime-shtml).

The hot weather of July 1980 resulted in 83 deaths in Memphis and at least 1,700 nationwide during that summer. This heat wave tragically demonstrated that heat and humidity can be a deadly combination. These factors put a lot of stress on the human body and can lead to serious health conditions such as heat exhaustion, heat stroke, or even death. The more extreme the temperature, the shorter the amount of exposure time needed to fall ill.

The Dangers of Excessive Heat

Heat waves have the potential to cover a large area, exposing a high number of people to a hazardous combination of heat and humidity. In fact, heat is typically the leading cause of weather related fatalities each year, averaging 123 deaths per year from 2004-2013 and even more heat-related illnesses. From 1998-2014, an average of 37 children nationwide have died each year from heat stroke in a vehicle. High temperatures and humidity, and thus heat-related illness, are common in the Mid-South.

Heat Index - a measure of how hot it feels

The Heat Index is a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature. To find the Heat Index temperature, look at the Heat Index Chart below or check this Heat Index Calculator. As an example, if the air temperature is 96°F and the relative humidity is 50%, the heat index - how hot it feels - is 108°F. The red area without numbers indicates extreme danger.

The National Weather Service in Memphis issues a Heat Advisory when the Heat Index is expected to peak between 105°F-109°F.  An Excessive Heat Watch is issued when, 24-72 hours in the future, the Heat Index is expected to exceed 110°F and overnight low temperatures will be above 75°F. An Excessive Heat Warning is issued when the Watch criteria above are occurring or imminent (within 24 hours). Since heat index values were devised for shady, light wind conditions, exposure to full sunshine can increase heat index values by up to 15°F.

Heat Safety Tips

Here are some hot weather safety tips to consider during the "dog days" of a Memphis summer:
  • Slow down! Reduce, eliminate or reschedule strenuous activities until the coolest time of the day. Children, seniors and anyone with health problems should stay in the coolest available place, not necessarily indoors.
  • Dress for summer. Wear lightweight, loose lifting, light-colored clothing to reflect heat and sunlight.
  • Eat light, cool, easy-to-digest foods such as fruit or salads.
  • Drink plenty of water (not very cold), non-alcoholic and decaffeinated fluids, even if you don't feel thirsty. If you on a fluid restrictive diet or have a problem with fluid retention, consult a physician before increasing consumption of fluids.
  • Use air conditioners or spend time in air-conditioned locations such as malls and libraries.
  • Use portable electric fans to exhaust hot air from rooms or draw in cooler air.
  • Do not direct the flow of portable electric fans toward yourself when room temperature is hotter than 90°F. The dry blowing air will dehydrate you faster, endangering your health.
  • Minimize direct exposure to the sun. Sunburn reduces your body's ability to dissipate heat.
  • Take a cool bath or shower.
  • Do not take salt tablets unless specified by a physician.
  • Check on older, sick, or frail people who may need help responding to the heat. 
  • Keep your children, disabled adults, and pets safe during tumultuous heat waves. Make sure outdoor pets have a shaded place to stay and that they have plenty of fresh water.
Parents, here are additional tips as you care for children in hot weather:
  • Touch a child's safety seat and safety belt before using it to ensure it's not too hot before securing a child
  • Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, even with the windows down, even for just a minute
  • Teach children not to play in, on, or around cars. They could accidentally trap themselves in a hot vehicle.
  • Always lock car doors and trunks - even at home - and keep keys out of children's reach.
  • Always make sure children have left the car when you reach your destination. Don't leave sleeping infants in the car ever!

Even on mild days in the 70s, studies have shown that the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rapidly rise to a dangerous level for children, pets and even adults. Leaving the windows slightly open does not significantly decrease the heating rate. The effects are more severe on children because their bodies warm at a rate 3-5 times faster than adults. A dark dashboard or carseat can quickly reach temperatures in the range of 180°F to over 200°F. These objects heat the adjacent air by conduction and convection and also give off long wave radiation, which then heats the air trapped inside a vehicle. Heat Illnesses

The following information is courtesy of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Heat cramps may be the first sign of heat-related illness, and may lead to heat exhaustion or stroke. Symptoms include painful muscle cramps and spasms, usually in the legs and abdomen, and heavy sweating. To treat cramps, apply firm pressure on cramping muscles or gently massage them to relieve spasm. Take sips of water unless nausea occurs, then stop drinking.

If a person experiences any of the following symptoms, heat exhaustion may have set in: heavy sweating; weakness; cool, pale, clammy skin; fast, weak pulse; possible muscle cramps; dizziness; nausea or vomiting; or fainting. Treatment includes laying the person down in a cooler environment, loosening clothing, applying cool, wet cloths to as much of the body as possible, fanning the body, and sips of water. If the person vomits more than once, seek immediate medical attention.

Heat stroke is the worst type of heat illness and is sometimes marked by an altered mental state. One or more of the following symptons is present: throbbing headache, confusion, nausea, dizziness, shallow breathing. Also the body temperature rises above 103°F, skin becomes hot, red, dry or moist, a rapid and strong pulse is felt, and the person faints or loses consciousness. Heat stroke is a severe medical emergency. Call 911 or get the victim to a hospital immediately. Delay can be fatal. Do not give fluids, otherwise treat the person as you would for heat exhaustion until medical assistance arrives.

Multi-day severe weather outbreak possible Sunday-Tuesday

A couple of hours of rain and storms and very few warnings were all that came of last night's severe weather risk and Thunderstorm Watch, but at least everything outdoors got a good pollen-washing!

All attention now turns to what may be a significant multi-day severe weather outbreak that begins in the Plains tomorrow, but then threatens the Mid-South and Mississippi Valley into the Southeast Sunday through Tuesday.  The map below identifies the areas that the Storm Prediction Center believes, at this time, are worth monitoring and could potentially see an outbreak of severe storms.


The left panel shows the severe weather risk area for Sunday. The Memphis metro is in a Slight Risk with the greatest threat from far eastern TX/OK into AR. Models are indicating storms will break out to our west during the day Sunday and move east towards the Mid-South, arriving sometime during the afternoon or evening. The highest risk of large hail, damaging wind, and tornadoes will be west of the river, but the metro will be in a favorable area for severe weather, which could include any mode - hail, wind, or tornadoes, as well as heavy rain and lightning - and last into at least the first half of the night.

The right panel above shows the risk area for Monday (red) and Tuesday (purple) with a large overlapping area for both days, including the Mid-South. Monday is our day of chief concern when the severe weather risk is centered over the region. Again, afternoon and evening are when the instability provided by the sun's warmth will be maximized, so the strongest storms would be most likely during those hours, however storms could be possible anytime from morning into the overnight. Until we get closer, timing storms is nearly impossible. Once again, all threats are possible, including large hail, high wind, and tornadoes. In addition, flash flooding could become a threat Monday as well due to the multiple rounds of storms.

By Tuesday (purple in the right panel above), the slow moving upper level system will push a bit further east and the actual cold front that will bring the severe weather threat to an end will move through. There is considerable uncertainty five days out as to when that happens. Until it does, more storms will be likely, especially during peak heating hours. We believe that threat is maximized east of the Mississippi River in TN, MS, and AL, but depending on the progress of the front, the west side of the threat area is hard to define. For now, SPC has the entire Mid-South outlooked for possible severe storms.

It's a beautiful day today and Saturday will be warmer and more humid but still a very nice day. Don't wait until Sunday to prepare for the likelihood of severe weather. Get your severe weather supplies/kits ready before Sunday. Know where your severe weather shelter will be wherever you will be Sunday through Tuesday. Check the batteries in your flashlights and weather radios and get StormWatch+ in your MWN mobile app set up ahead of time. In sum, take the time on good weather days to prepare for the bad!


This is not written to hype the event or preach doom and gloom, but we honestly haven't seen the threat of severe weather over multiple days in a couple of years (since the awful spring of 2011) in this area of the country. I'm not saying this is another April 2011 event, but overall, severe weather has been fairly benign for with a few exceptions since then. Keep it here for more updates as we get further information and follow us on social media for the latest as well.

Halloween Week Forecast: Warmer through Wednesday, then a stormy Halloween

To start your week off, we're going to focus on weather through Halloween. The big picture is increasing moisture with warmer temps each day, then a frontal passage and precipitation for Halloween. Get the details below.

We started this morning off with a large area of fog across the Mid-South. As a result temps will sit near 60 for much of the morning but as fog starts to clear, expect peaks of sun this afternoon which will help bring temps into the low 70's. Southerly wind will slowly increase moisture tonight, this combined with mostly cloudy conditions will limit temperatures from falling much below 60 in the metro.

Tuesday looks quite similar to today, with the main difference being less fog in the morning. This will allow for periods of sunshine much earlier and as a result higher temperatures (near 80). As for overnight conditions, expect low temperatures to be warmer as a result of clouds, higher moisture content at the surface, as well as light to moderate winds. Wednesday is nearly a carbon copy of Tuesday with both days seeing an isolated to slight chance of a shower.

Thursday is when things start to get tricky (pun intended!). An approaching cold front will provide the lift mechanism necessary for thunderstorms, while plenty of moisture (dewpoints in the 60s), modest instability, and strong wind shear should be present to fuel them. Details including intensity and timing will still need to be refined, but as of now plan on a wet and stormy Halloween with both heavy rain and severe storms a possibility. Currently, the majority of activity looks to occur during daylight hours, but we cannot quite rule out a lingering shower or thunderstorm Halloween evening. We'll have more details by Wednesday.

This time of year is not off-season for severe weather. In fact, November into early December is considered "secondary severe weather season" in the south. As seasons transition, it's not unusual to have strong fronts move through. In these transitions seasons of spring and fall, typically the jetstream is stronger and low and mid-level wind is also stronger, providing more fuel for the storms in the form of wind shear. The key ingredient that (sometimes) is not as plentiful is instability. Showers ahead of the main storms, timing offset from peak heating, and other factors can play a negative role in instability.  With the upcoming system, instability seems to be the biggest question mark, though we expect there will be enough to fuel storm activity. The more instability, the higher the potential for strong to severe storms.

Now is a great time to review your severe weather safety plans as we enter a season that can bring hazardous weather.  It's been some time since we've had to exercise those plans, so review ahead of time. Here is a good place to start.  School administrative personnel should also review how they get their severe weather information and what their plans are in case action needs to be taken during the school day.

The end of sub-90 weather and re-introducing "heat index"

UPDATE: As of 3:09pm, Memphis International Airport officially reached 91 degrees. Welcome to summer!


Ladies and gentlemen, appearing for the first time in 276 days, please welcome back to Memphis, TN - THE 90's!!

OK, so maybe you're not excited about it either, but today's forecast high of 91 at Memphis Int'l Airport will officially end our "90s drought" at 276 days and mark the latest initial occurrence of 90 degrees in Memphis in 10 years.  The last time it was June 10 before we hit 90 for the first time was 2003.

Memphis last reached 90+ on September 7th, or 276 days ago, when we topped out at 96. In fact, during that time span, September and February temperatures averaged very near "normal," while the typically colder months of December and January were above normal and the other months (October, November, March, April, and May) all averaged below normal. Overall, that ends up making for a rather nice 9-month period with a warmer than average winter and cooler than average spring!


Now that we're back to the 90s again, it'll definitely feel like a Memphis summer this week. No flirting with 90 for long - it's straight to the mid 90s and typical Memphis humidity for a few days at least.  Once again, we'll have to start including the dreaded Heat Index in the forecast once again as massive high pressure over the southern plains  impinges on the lower Mississippi Valley, squashing thunderstorm chances and allowing temps and humidity to rise. Remember that all official temperatures are taken in the shade and heat index readings are also for shady locations.  It can be as much as 5-15 degrees warmer in direct sunlight and as hot as 110 degrees or higher in airtight vehicles parked in the sun for as little as 20 minutes!

Spring weather pattern means the beginning of severe weather season

While most Mid-Southerners are grateful for consecutive days in the 70s (especially on the weekend!), Mid-South meteorologists and weather weenies are keenly aware that a persistent southerly flow of moisture off the Gulf of Mexico and warm temperatures are harbingers of convective weather. And those same people, including yours truly, have been closely monitoring a potent storm system that will sweep across the Mississippi Valley the middle of next week.  This blog serves as a heads up to the rest of you that this strong spring cold front will bear watching in the coming days.

The Storm Prediction Center is giving ample notice to the southern plains and mid/lower Mississippi Valley that a storm system that will move across the region next week will have the main ingredients in place to produce severe weather.  There are several issues that must still be resolved, including exact timing of the front, that must be worked out. However, very warm air (75-80 degree temps locally for several days) and plenty of moisture from the Gulf courtesy of 4-5 days of south winds, plus the front and strong wind at all levels of the atmosphere, are the main ingredients necessary to produce what may become a widespread multi-day severe weather event.  The graphic below highlights the areas that SPC believes are at the greatest threat for severe weather Tuesday and Wednesday.  These are subject to change in the coming days, but likely more in the fine-scale details than in whether or not severe weather occurs.

For the Mid-South, MWN is targeting Wednesday night as our most likely time for storms, some of which could easily be severe. The two main long-range models we use (GFS and European) are still several hours apart in their timing, but both indicate that severe weather is a good possibility.  (Remember that model output is NOT a forecast, but one possibility of how a very complex situation might turn out.) With strong wind from the ground up to the jet stream, and sufficient "turning" of those winds in the lowest several thousand feet, the main concerns we have at this early date are damaging straight line winds (primarily) and tornadoes (secondarily).  Hail is also a possibility, while widespread flooding does not at this time look too likely.

Included in your severe weather safety plan should be multiple ways of getting severe weather warnings, including overnight.  Do NOT count on sirens to warn you, especially if you are inside or asleep!  (Why? Severe Weather Awareness 2013: Tornado Safety

Tornadoes are violent columns of rotating air that are produced by severe thunderstorms.  Weak tornadoes produce wind of  65-85 mph, while the strongest (such as the Joplin, MO tornado of May 2011), produce wind of over 200 mph and can be 1/2 to 1 mile wide or greater. Not all severe thunderstorms produce tornadoes, only a small fraction do, but people should be alert for the possibility if and when a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued.

Tornado safety rules include:
  • At home or in small buildings, go to the basement or storm shelter, or to a windowless interior room such as a closet or bathroom on the lowest level.  Get under something sturdy such as a table or heavy bed.
  • Abandon mobile homes and vehicles for a sturdy structure.
  • In large buildings such as at school, shopping centers, hospitals, or factories/warehouses, go to the predesignated shelter area. Interior hallways on the lowest floor are best. Stay out of areas with high roofs or large roof spans, as they typically offer little to no protection from tornadic wind.
  • At all times, avoid windows or large panes of glass.
  • If outside and sturdy structures are not available, try to drive to the nearest sturdy structure for shelter.  If one is not available, lie down in an area that is lower than surrounding areas (ditch or ravine if possible) with arms/hands shielding your head.
  • When taking cover, have shoes on, photo ID on your person, cell phone (preferably charged in advance) with you, and crouch down and protect the back of your neck with your arms and hands.
A Tornado Watch, typically issued for a large area such as many counties, means that conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms that can produce tornadoes. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or other commercial outlets for possible warnings and watch the sky for the possibility of developing severe weather.  Have your plan ready should a warning be issued and be ready to exercise it.

A Tornado Warning, typically issued for a small area in the path of a storm, means that Doppler Radar has indicated the likelihood of a tornado or a tornado has been sighted by trained spotters or law enforcement.  If you are in the path of the storm, immediately find shelter using the rules above.

A Tornado Emergency is not a warning type, but is issued (usually following the original Tornado Warning) when a large and destructive tornado has been confirmed and is moving into a populated area.  The risk of destruction and fatalities is high and an elevated call-to-action is required.  Everyone in the storm's path should immediately take action.

11 Reasons why Mid-South tornadoes are so insidious

While Tornado Alley may be the Hollywood backdrop for storm-chasing worthy tornado action, those of us living in the south know that Tornado Alley's redneck cousin, Dixie Alley, is where the real action is when it comes to deadly tornadoes!  In fact, statistics show that Dixie Alley is where the majority of killer events occur.  

The graphics below show that, while the frequency of tornadoes is highest across the Plains from the Corn Belt to north Texas, killer tornadoes are most likely in the Mid-South and Tennessee Valley.  In fact, the highest frequency of significant (EF-2+) tornadoes stretches from a peak in the Red River Valley east into the mid-lower Mississippi Valley, including the Mid-South.


In light of the statistics above, here are 11 reasons why Dixie Alley tornadoes, as compared to those in Tornado Alley, are more insidious (in no particular order).

1. High frequency overall - While Tornado Alley boasts the greatest number of overall tornadoes in the nation, and perhaps the world, the south is no slouch. And in fact, when considering "significant tornadoes" (EF-2+), Dixie Alley and the Mid-South in particular are just behind Oklahoma and the Red River Valley and exceed most of the Plain states. The average annual number of tornadoes in Dixie Alley per 10,000 square miles is 6-9+, rivaling just about any other area in the nation.


2. Frequency of nocturnal tornadoes - Just about anyone living in Dixie Alley for any length of time can tell you that the sound of tornado sirens wailing or Weather Radios screeching in the middle of the night is enough to either frighten or frustrate nearly everyone, especially when it occurs on a relatively frequent basis. In fact, AR, TN, MS, and AL all have 50% or more of their tornado deaths at night, with TN at 73.3%! Due to the likelihood of more tornadoes in transitions seasons (more in #3 below) than other areas, more tornadoes also occur after dark. When is the most likely time to die in a tornado?  When you can't see it coming or are sleeping through a warning (at least until it's too late).


3. No well-defined tornado season - Alluded to above, unlike Tornado Alley when tornadoes are generally concentrated during "tornado season" from roughly April-June, Dixie Alley sees an abundance of tornadic storms in the "cool" or transitions seasons.  In fact, there is a notable severe weather peak (albeit lower than spring time) in November and early December in the South that exists nowhere else in the U.S. However, it is not unusual (despite post-storm media reports to the contrary) to see tornadoes in winter and even summer (one of the best "off-season" examples being the Super Tuesday Outbreak of February 2008).  When tornado season is spread out over the course of the year, preparedness and awareness tend to be low.  In Tornado Alley, the preparedness level in the spring is at an all-time high.

4. Fast storm motion - Because of the nature of Dixie Alley storms to occur more often in the spring and fall, the storms that develop tend to be pushed by a stronger jet stream than in the late spring/summer when jet streams are typically less vivacious. A stronger jet results in faster moving storms. Faster moving storms mean A) less time for forecasters to react and warn the public (though southern meteorologists take this into account and by and large do a fantastic job at providing excellent lead time) and B) less time for the public to process the threat and respond accordingly. When a tornado is moving at 40-50+ mph, it doesn't take long to cross the typical county and residents must be ready to take cover when the warning is issued. Some of the videos of Dixie Alley tornadoes appear to be time-lapsed when in reality the funnels really are moving THAT fast!

5.  Rain-wrapped funnels - This refers to the nature of southern tornadoes to tend to be less "visible" to the public due to having rain surrounding the funnel.  In Tornado Alley, moisture is often not nearly as abundant as in the South, where southerly wind off the generous Gulf of Mexico provides ample moisture for heavy rainfall.  In addition, higher low level humidity also means lower cloud bases.  These factors result in tornadoes in the Plains that are "picturesque," with their funnels easily identifiable from a long distance, while in Dixie Alley, what appears to be a heavy shower could actually be masking a deadly swirl of air lurking inside.

6. Terrain / trees - The South loves it's trees. They're everywhere and they make for great scenery, ample lumber, and cool shade in unbearably hot and humid summers.  Hilly terrain (at least moreso than the Plains - outside of the Mississippi Delta region) also provides for scenic Sunday drives and interesting local effects on the weather.  However, vegetation and terrain also make for a great game of hide-and-seek with tornadoes.  Visibility, as in #5, significantly affects the ability to survive a twister.

7.  High population density - While it may seem that there are lots of rural areas in the South, when compared to the miles upon miles of deserted farm and pasture land of the Plains, the population density of Dixie Alley is actually much higher than in Tornado Alley.  If a tornado touches down in the middle of nowhere in Kansas and no chasers are there to record it, does it even count?  Try doing that in the South.  If it's not brushing up against a mid-size or larger city, there are likely at least 2-3 hamlets or single-stoplight towns in the path. Bottom line: nearly every tornado in Dixie Alley will affect SOMEBODY.

8. Low quality construction - Hate to say it, but it's a fact. Housing stock in the southeast U.S. is, on average, poorer than the Plains.  In particular, the abundance of mobile homes, manufactured homes, or trailers (or whatever you want to call them), means that even the weakest tornadoes can wreak havoc on the occupants of one of these dwellings. Here are the facts: from 2001-2005,  nearly 57% of all tornado fatalities occurred in non-permanent housing and the number has consistently been rising. Stick-built, or permanent, houses accounted for just over 25% of tornado deaths. In AR, AL, GA, MS, and TN from 1985-2005, 52% of all tornado deaths occurred in mobile homes. Add to that that the southeast U.S. has the highest percentage of mobile homes east of the Rockies and you have a recipe for disaster. More mobile homes = more death.

9. Lack of basements and storm shelters - Anecdotally, we know that there are very few underground places of shelter in the southeast.  Due primarily to construction costs among other factors, basements are very rare.  In addition, storm shelters are also rare, likely due to their relatively high cost as compared to demographics.  In Tornado Alley, a large percentage of the population has either a basement or a storm shelter. Some tornadoes are only survivable if you are underground, plain and simple.  Even the most well-constructed homes are Lincoln Logs to an EF-4/5.

10. Demographics - It is what it is.  The "social vulnerability" of those living in Dixie Alley is higher than in other tornado-prone areas of the country. Poverty is higher (which likely factors into #8 above) and the age of the populace is higher.  Both likely contribute to the fatality rate. In fact, the percentage of tornado fatalities of those over age 50 is higher than the percent of the population of that age, suggesting that older people are more vulnerable.  On the other hand, the percentage of tornado deaths of those under 30 is much lower than the percentage of the population in those age brackets, meaning younger people tend to do a better job of heeding the storms and sheltering appropriately.

11. Apathy - Perhaps the hardest, and easiest, reason to understand, there's no getting the fact that we tend to be apathetic. "It'll never happen to me." "The sirens are always sounding." "Tornadoes don't happen at this time of year/day."  Helen Keller said, "Science may have found a cure for most evils; but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all - the apathy of human beings."  True, the false alarm rate for tornado warnings is high - but which would you rather have, a few extra warnings or one that truly does his "without warning?"  The science is improving and false alarms are decreasing, but we have to counter apathy with education and information.

The bottom line

Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee lead the nation in terms of tornado deaths per square kilometer AND killer tornadoes per square kilometer. Most of the other states in Dixie Alley also have averages well above the rest of the nation. While we don't see as many tornadoes by sheer number, Dixie Alley is the most vulnerable part of the nation when it comes to severe weather, due to all of the factors described above.  Most of these factors won't change, but an apathetic populace is inexcusable. The National Weather Service offices across the south know exactly what they are dealing with and do a fantastic job warning the public when severe weather is possible, sometimes days in advance.

Every home must have a NOAA Weather Radio programmed for the county in which it resides. We need to stop relying on outdoor sirens to be the sole warning of impending storms. Technology now allows us to reduce apathy by targeting warnings to those in the path of the storm. Severe Weather Awareness 2013: Severe Thunderstorms

THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY TWO THOUSAND THUNDERSTORMS IN PROGRESS AROUND THE WORLD AT ANY GIVEN TIME. MOST OF THESE STORMS ARE BENEFICIAL AND BRING NEEDED RAIN. ONLY A SMALL FRACTION LESS THAN ONE PERCENT ARE CLASSIFIED AS SEVERE. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ARE THOSE THUNDERSTORMS THAT PRODUCE HAIL ONE INCH IN DIAMETER OR LARGER AND/OR STRONG WIND GUSTS OF 58 MPH OR GREATER. HAIL THAT IS ONE INCH IN DIAMETER IS ABOUT THE SIZE OF A QUARTER.

A SMALL FRACTION OF THESE THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCE TORNADOES. ALL THUNDERSTORMS ARE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING DEADLY LIGHTNING. THE HEAVY RAINS OR THE LIGHTNING ACTIVITY IN A THUNDERSTORM DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH A THUNDERSTORM BEING CLASSIFIED AS SEVERE.

SOME OF THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS SAFETY RULES ARE AS FOLLOWS:

FIND SHELTER IMMEDIATELY. GO TO A STURDY BUILDING THAT WILL WITHSTAND HIGH WINDS. AVOID ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES AND TELEPHONES.

IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO BRING YOUR CAR INSIDE A GARAGE AND TO SECURE LOOSE OBJECTS.

REMEMBER... A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING MEANS THAT A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM IS OCCURRING. THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM HAS BEEN DETECTED BY THE DOPPLER RADAR OR REPORTED TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BY OUR SKYWARN SPOTTER NETWORK OR THE LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY IN A PARTICULAR COUNTY.

A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS THAT CONDITIONS ARE RIGHT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS TO DEVELOP BUT NONE HAS BEEN OBSERVED. FOLKS SHOULD KEEP AN EYE ON THE SKY AND LISTEN TO COMMERCIAL BROADCASTS OR WEATHER RADIO FOR ANY SUBSEQUENT WARNINGS.

WHEN A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING IS ISSUED FOR YOUR LOCATION... TREAT IT THE SAME AS YOU WOULD A TORNADO WARNING. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAN PRODUCE DAMAGING WINDS... LARGE HAIL AND DEADLY LIGHTNING.

Video evidence that lightning safety tips work!

As we near secondary severe weather season in the south (November-early January), I ran across the following videos that prove lightning safety tips DO work and should be heeded as thunderstorms (not necessarily even severe storms) approach.

The first proves that the Faraday Cage that is a vehicle is a safe place to shelter during storms (caveat: cars are not the safest places to be during high wind or possible tornadoes).  Check out the SUV struck by lightning and the results!



On the flip side, if you don't seek appropriate shelter as thunderstorms near, this could be the tragic result:



The NWS mantra regarding lightning safety is "when thunder roars, go indoors!"  It was proven again earlier this summer at a NASCAR event in Pocono, PA when a fan was killed after being struck by lightning, while he was standing next to his car!  His safe place was literally right next to him.  This is simply inexcusable!

Know and practice these tips:
  • If you can hear the thunder, you're close enough to get struck by lightning, which can reach out 10 miles from a thunderstorm
  • If lightning is a threat, get in a vehicle or fully-enclosed building with wiring or plumbing
  • Avoid water sources and electronic equipment that is plugged into an outlet while in shelter
Sound travels about 1 mile in 5 seconds, so to determine your distance from a lightning strike, count the seconds between the lightning and thunder and divide by 5. (2 miles = 10 seconds)

Flood Safety Awareness Week: March 12-16

The NWS has designated March 12-16, 2012, as Flood Safety Awareness Week

It floods somewhere in the United States or its territories nearly every day of the year. In the past 30 years, floods have claimed an average of 94 lives a year and the economic impacts of floods are growing. The annual average inflation-adjusted direct damage costs due to flooding have risen each of the past three decades from $4.7 billion for 1981-1990, to $7.9 billion for 1991-2000, to $10.2 billion for 2001-2010. The goals of Flood Safety Awareness Week are to inform the public about NWS forecast and warning services and flood safety information, heighten public awareness to the risks associated with all types of floods including flash flooding, storm surge, and those related to dam or levee failures, and empower citizens to take actions necessary to protect their lives and property.

2011 was a devastating year for flooding impacts and provided a clear example of why Americans depend on multi-agency water resource services like flood forecasts and warnings issued by the NWS, water observations provided by the USGS, water control and management provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency's efforts in flood preparedness and response. At any time, heavy rainfall or rapid snow melt can lead to flooding. Each geographic region of the United States has one or more times of the year with an increased risk of flooding. In the late fall and winter, powerful Pacific storms can strike the West Coast causing extensive flooding. From late winter into spring, people living across the northern third of the nation closely monitor NWS forecasts when snow and ice can melt quickly, potentially causing ice jams and extensive river flooding. In the spring and summer, the threat of a flash flood from a thunderstorm is always a possibility almost anywhere in the country. Each summer and fall, millions of people living near the Gulf and East coasts listen keenly to tropical weather reports to determine if flooding from a tropical storm or hurricane will impact their area. As our nation's infrastructure ages, increased stresses on dams and levees due to the seasonal impacts described above can heighten flood threats. Regardless of the cause, the NWS is committed to improving the timeliness and accuracy of river and flood forecasts and warnings necessary to help protect lives and livelihoods.

Water resources decision makers require new and more integrated information and services to adapt to the uncertainty of future climate, land-use changes, an aging water delivery infrastructure, and an increasing demand on limited resources. Dr. Thomas Graziano, Chief of the NWS Hydrologic Services Division, stated; To address these growing challenges and to mitigate the death and destruction caused by floods, NOAA, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the U.S. Geological Survey, with complementary missions in water science, observation, prediction and management, have formed a partnership entitled Integrated Water Resources Science and Services (IWRSS) to address the nation's water resources information and management needs. In May 2011, this partnership was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the three agencies.

On February 21, 2012, NOAA commenced the official groundbreaking of the new National Water Center (NWC) on the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Gary Carter, Director of the NWS Office of Hydrologic Development, stated, The NWC will create a first-of-its-kind national center for water forecast operations, research and interagency coordination and serve as a catalyst for IWRSS. It will support the routine generation of enhanced water resources forecasts and information to more effectively manage the Nation's increasingly limited water supply and facilitate adaptive planning and management. The NWC will be ready for initial occupation in late fiscal year 2013 and will be staffed by multiple federal partner water agencies to ensure strong coordination and collaboration.

Turn Around Don't Drown

Most flood-related deaths occur in motor vehicles when people attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Don't underestimate the power of flowing water across a road. It only takes 12 to 18 inches of water to cause a vehicle, even large SUVs, to float. Unknown to the driver, the road may even be washed away under the surface of the water, allowing the vehicle to be swept away with the flood current. The NWS has developed the flood safety slogan: Turn Around Don't Drown and hopes you will remember these words when you're faced with a flooded roadway and have an important decision to make. Be especially cautious when driving at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers.

Floods, Droughts, and Other Related Phenomena.

Hydrologic extremes have always plagued our vast nation. In 2011 the nation experienced severe drought in Texas and Oklahoma, snowmelt flooding in the northern tier states, heavy rainfall flooding over the Ohio and Middle Mississippi River Valleys that lead to flooding along the Lower Mississippi River and inland flooding from tropical systems along the east coast states and into New England.
