Winter Storm Warning issued for Memphis


URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MEMPHIS TN
410 PM CST THU JAN 28 2010

...MAJOR WINTER STORM EXPECTED ACROSS THE MIDSOUTH LATE TONIGHT
THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT...

.ARCTIC AIR WILL CONTINUE TO PUSH INTO THE MIDSOUTH FROM THE NORTH
TONIGHT AND FRIDAY WITH TEMPERATURES DROPPING TO BELOW FREEZING.
MEANWHILE...LOW PRESSURE WILL TRACK TO THE SOUTH OF THE AREA
SPREADING PRECIPITATION INTO THE MIDSOUTH BY LATE TONIGHT AND FRIDAY.
A PROGRESSIVELY SOUTHWARD CHANGEOVER FROM RAIN TO FREEZING
RAIN...SLEET AND SNOW WILL OCCUR FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY
NIGHT.

NORTHEAST WINDS OF 15 TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 30 MPH WILL LIKELY
ACCOMPANY THE WINTRY PRECIPITATION. THESE WINDS COULD STRESS ICY
TREE BRANCHES AND POWER LINES CAUSING POWER OUTAGES. WIND CHILLS
WILL DROP INTO THE TEENS BY FRIDAY MORNING OVER PARTS OF THE AREA.

TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN BELOW FREEZING OVER MUCH OF THE AREA
THROUGH THE WEEKEND. AS A RESULT...A PROLONGED PERIOD OF SNOW AND
ICE COVERED ROADS MAY OCCUR. TEMPERATURES MAY DROP INTO THE SINGLE
DIGITS ACROSS THE NORTHERN HALF OF THE MIDSOUTH SUNDAY MORNING.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MEMPHIS HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM
WARNING FOR SNOW...SLEET...AND FREEZING RAIN...WHICH IS IN EFFECT
FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO 6 AM CST SATURDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH
IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

* THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR ICE ACCUMULATIONS UP TO ONE QUARTER
INCH OR MORE ALONG THE INTERSTATE 40 CORRIDOR...INCLUDING THE
MEMPHIS METRO AND JACKSON AREAS. IN ADDITION TO THE ICE...SNOW
AND SLEET ACCUMULATIONS OF 3 TO 6 INCHES WILL BE POSSIBLE.

* WINTRY PRECIPITATION IS ANTICIPATED TO BEGIN BY LATE TONIGHT AND
PERSIST THROUGH FRIDAY EVENING. LIGHT SNOW MAY OCCUR LATE
FRIDAY NIGHT.

* ICE ACCUMULATIONS MAY CREATE DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS.
COMBINED WITH GUSTY NORTHEAST WINDS...THESE ICE ACCUMULATIONS
MAY CREATE STRESS ON TREE LIMBS AND POWER LINES. HEAVY SNOW AND
SLEET ACCUMULATIONS ARE ALSO POSSIBLE.
