2023 Yearly Climate Review for Memphis, TN

Climate Recap

2023 will go into the history books as the fourth warmest year on record in Memphis with near average precipitation for the year. However, those overall statistics do now tell the entire story, particularly with respect to precipitation. Below is a summary of monthly temperature and precipitation data. On average, spring and summer were near to cooler than average. However, the cool season from fall to winter was much warmer than average. This resulted in an overall annual departure from normal of +1.7 degrees. There were 16 warm weather records set in 2023 and no cool temperature records.

On the precipitation side, with the exception of a dry May, precipitation ran above to well above average. The back half of the year, though, saw that surplus disappear, resulting in severe to extreme fall and early winter drought across the metro, and exceptional drought in north MS. In 2023, NWS-Memphis issued 372 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, 83 Tornado Warnings, and 54 Flash Flood Warnings for their 5-county coverage area over the Mid-South.

2020 Annual Climate Report for Memphis, TN

2020 Annual Summary

Overall, the year 2020 featured temperatures that averaged 0.4 degrees above average, identical to 2019. However it came about with fewer extremes than the previous year. Six months averaged above normal temperatures and six below, though the warm months had greater departures from normal than the cool months, thus resulting in an above average year.

The map above shows the departure from normal temperatures for 2020. (WeatherBell)

Precipitation-wise, the year started wet, but spring and early summer drought reversed the early excess. By December 29, precipitation was just slightly below normal, however three inches of rain to end the year resulted in a departure of +2 inches.

A NOAA map of landfalling tropical cyclones in the U.S. Three of these brought rainfall to the Mid-South - Hurricanes Laura, Delta, and Zeta.

Month-by-month recap

The year started warm and wet with temperatures that averaged over five degrees above normal and precipitation totaling almost 2.5 inches above normal. The patter favored severe weather in the pre-dawn hours on the 11th as a squall line moved through, dropping six tornadoes in the Memphis metro, the strongest an EF-2 that passed between Hernando and Olive Branch, MS. About 40,000 MLGW customers lost power due to strong wind. There were also a few snowflakes around the area on the 20th, but none recorded at Memphis International Airport. February continued the wet trend, finishing nearly 2 inches above average, but temperatures were closer to normal. There was one snow event, with up to an inch of snow falling on the night of the 6th-7th and flurries again on the 20th. Thunderstorms also occurred on five days, but there was no severe weather.

The first quarter of 2020 ended in March the way it began - warm and wet. Temperatures averaged 4.5 degrees above normal and precipitation was more than 4 inches above normal as spring set in. From the 9th to the 24th, measurable rain occurred on 14 of the 16 days, and 20 days for the month reported rain, tying the record set in 1897. Severe weather occurred on the 28th with trees down in multiple locations across Shelby County. For the first three months of 2020, rain fell on 51 days, just missing the record of 52 set way back in 1882.

Heading into April, the weather turned cooler with temperatures averaging over 2.5 degrees below normal. It was still wet, but very near the average of 5.5 inches of rain. However, almost half of that occurred on a single day - Easter Sunday, April 12 - when severe wind damaged some trees and power lines. Severe weather also occurred on the 8th and 28th/29th, all of which were wind related. Only two April days reached 80 degrees, one less than March! May typically sees much warmer temperatures as summer approaches, and though it did warm up, Memphis still averaged more than 2 degrees below normal, with only one day that eclipsed 90 degrees. In fact, there were some late-season lows in the 40s during the second week of the month! While severe weather was limited, a destructive event on the 22nd produced widespread damaging wind in Crittenden and Shelby Counties with over 52,000 MLGW customers without power as Memorial Day weekend started.

Meteorological summer began in June with cooler than average temperatures for the third consecutive month, though not be a lot. It was also a bit drier than average, though severe weather occurred a couple of times in the first week of the month. The main event was a straight line wind system that resulted in the highest wind of the year at Memphis International - 58 mph - on the 5th. There was also some flash flooding on the 9th from slow moving storms. July was the hottest month of the year, with temperatures that averaged about 1.5 degrees above normal, in the mid 80s. In fact, the heat was persistent with only two days that failed to reach 90 degrees and low temperatures that never left the 70s the entire month. Precipitation was well below average, less than two inches for the month. Severe weather was limited.

Finally, summer wrapped up with a break from persistent heat in August as the first week of the month averaged five degrees below normal and the month ending 1.3 degrees below average with several mornings in the 60s. Precipitation ended well above normal (12th wettest on record) with remnants of Major Hurricane Laura contributing both heavy rain and strong wind, as well as a few weak tornadoes in northeast AR on the 28th. Overall, to have two of the three summer months with below average heat was not too bad. Memphis did not reach 100 degrees in 2020.

The cooler than average trend in August was reversed for the first half of September as summer hung around, but was countered by autumn's arrival in the second half of the month. October saw multiple fronts and large temperatures swings but also ended below normal. September precipitation was hard to come by with just over an inch and a half total, though October made up for the previous month with well over four inches recorded. However, most of that fell on either the 10th, as remnants of Hurricane Delta passed through north MS, or the 28th, with remnants of Hurricane Zeta combining with a front to drop heavy rain. There was one severe weather event, on September 2nd, when scattered strong storms downed some trees and a Tornado Warning was issued as one briefly rotated on approach to the Bluff City.

The winter season began warm and dry in November. In fact, the average high temperature for the month ended up 7th warmest on record, while the average temperature for the month was in the top 10% of all Novembers on record, despite a cold snap to end the month that included snow flurries. There were only four rain days and precipitation ended up only 32% of normal with no severe weather. To end the year, December ended slightly warmer than average as a whole, but featured one of the coldest Christmas Days on record with a high of only 33 degrees. Precipitation was below average until the last two days of the year when three inches of rain fell, yielding an annual total that was two inches above average.

A month-by-month summary of average temperatures and precipitation can be found below.

Severe weather

In 2020, the Memphis office of the National Weather Service issued 286 combined Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Warnings in their service area (221 Severe Thunderstorm and 65 Tornado). The combined number of severe weather warnings is well below the average for the past 25 years of 406. Also in 2020, there were 19 Tornado Watches and 9 Severe Thunderstorm Watches issued by the Storm Prediction Center that included some portion of the Memphis service area. The Tornado Watch count was well above the 25-year average of 11, while the Severe Thunderstorm Watch count was just below the average of 10.

The Mid-South (defined by the National Weather Service Memphis service area of eastern AR, the MO Bootheel, west TN, and north MS) recorded 33 tornadoes during 2020. There were four EF-2 tornadoes, including one in DeSoto County, and one EF-3 in Craighead County, AR, while the rest were rated EF-0 or EF-1.

Within the eight-county Memphis metropolitan area, there were five tornado touchdowns rated EF-0 to EF-2. All five occurred in the pre-dawn hours on January 11. All but one occurred in northwest MS, including the EF-2 in DeSoto County mentioned above, and one touched down in southwest TN (Fayette County). For the year, the NWS-Memphis office received 577 severe (convective) weather reports within their service area. Below is a listing of all tornadoes that occurred in the state of TN in 2020 and severe weather reports in the greater Memphis metro.

Memphis, TN Annual Climate Summary for 2019

2019 Annual Recap

Memphis weather in the year 2019 will be remembered for some very wet months that led to one of the rainiest years on record, as well as fairly large temperatures swings month-to-month. Overall the year ended in the upper echelon of warm years with a 0.4 degree departure from average. Precipitation-wise, eight of the twelve months of 2019 were above average, three by more than four inches and one of those (October) setting a new monthly record. In sum, the year ended fourth wettest on record.

Month-by-month recap

The precipitation anomaly for the year started in month #1 as January recorded about 3/4" of rain above average. Temperatures also averaged a bit above normal. January also featured the only measurable snowfall for 2019, 0.2" on the 19th. The trend was more pronounced in February with warm and wet weather continuing. In fact, it was the eighth wettest February on record and featured three days with more than an inch of rain, one of those greater than two inches. The warmth early in the month, with multiple 70+ degree days was broken up by a couple of cold spells, but overall warmth. Heading into meteorological spring, the weather turned much cooler and drier relative to average. March averaged less than two degrees warmer than the preceding month with two-thirds of the days below average. Four inches of rain fell, but that is more than an inch below normal.

Heading into April, temperatures rebounded to near average while precipitation returned to above average status with almost eight inches falling for the month over eleven rain days. Heading into May, temperatures rose above average, including one record - a 73 degree low temperature on the 21st. In fact, for the second half of the month, not a single day had below normal temperatures. Precipitation was about where it is expected climatologically.

Summer was wet with the three months of June, July and August recording a total of over 21.5 inches of rain, or almost 10.5 inches above normal. June finished 5th wettest on record and July 11th wettest, while August was also above normal. Because of all the precipitation, summer was also, on average, cooler than normal. In fact, a record morning low of 62 degrees was set on July 25 - a rarity when summer mornings usually start at or above 70. August temperatures started to warm more as expected, but couldn't make up for the relative cool conditions in June and July.

Typically temperatures relax heading into September, particularly the latter half of the month, but 2019 was an anomaly as the month was the warmest on record. September typically is about seven degrees cooler than August. Not in 2019, as it actually ended 1.3 degrees warmer than the usual hottest month of the year! All but one day in September recorded a high at or above 89 degrees and there were 13 days with highs of 95 or higher, including the hottest day of the year - 100 on the 16th! Not a single day recorded below average temperatures. Part of the reason for the heat was a temporary drought that lasted throughout the month, with only 0.12" of rain for September, third driest on record.

The heat continued into the first week of October as the month started with three consecutive daily high temperature records (96, 97, and 98 degrees) before a very wet system moved through on the 6th and 7th, dropping nearly 4.5" of rain. Nearly the entire rest of the month featured below average temperatures and many more rain events. October set a record for wettest in history with almost 13" of rain, including another six and one-half inches in the last week of the month. Two daily rainfall records were broken during the month, putting the city more than 20 inches of rain above normal with two months left to go in the year.

Once the script flipped cold in mid-October, it continued into November with no days above average through the first 18. In fact, the cold was reinforced mid-month with two days featuring record lows (20 degrees on the 12th and 17 on the 13th) and a record cold high temperature of 30 degrees also on the 12th. In fact, snow flurries also occurred on both the 11th and 12th. Temperatures warmed the second half of the month, including a high of 70 on Thanksgiving Day. A decent amount of precipitation in the final third of the month brought the total closer to average, though still finishing more than an inch below a typical November.

Finally, December didn't cool off at all, with a monthly average temperature that was just shy of November's average and a mix of above and below normal days. Precipitation again finished below average with just over 4 inches recorded. Snow flurries also fell twice during the month.

A month-by-month summary of average temperatures and precipitation can be found below.

Severe weather

In 2019, the Memphis office of the National Weather Service issued 294 combined Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Warnings in their service area (161 Severe Thunderstorm and 43 Tornado). It is notable that the combined warning number is the fewest issued by NWS-Memphis in the past 20 years (at least). The previous lowest was 250 in 2013. With respect to Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, the 161 issued were also the lowest in the past 2 decades, lower than the previous record of 213 in 2013. The 43 Tornado Warnings ranked eighth fewest in the past 20 years. Also in 2019, there were 13 Tornado Watches and 9 Severe Thunderstorm Watches issued by the Storm Prediction Center that included some portion of the Memphis service area.

The Mid-South recorded 26 tornadoes, most weak, during 2019. There were four EF-2 tornadoes, all in northeast MS, with the rest rated EF-0 or EF-1. Within the eight-county Memphis metropolitan area, there were four tornado touchdowns. Most notable was an EF-1 twister that hit southeast Memphis on October 21st. In addition, EF-0 tornadoes touched down in western Tipton County, northwest Marshall County, and southeast Tunica County. For the year, the NWS-Memphis office received 268 severe weather reports (convective) within their service area.

The following represents a statistical recap of the weather for 2019 in Memphis. Another recap of  weather across the Mid-South for 2019, produced by the National Weather Service in Memphis, will be published soon.

Memphis, TN Annual Climate Summary for 2018

2018 Annual Recap

Overall, despite some periods of very hot and extreme cold temperatures, and some excessively wet spells and a few dry months, 2018 ended with very close to average temperatures and precipitation that was well above average.

January started the year on a temperature roller coaster with warm spells in the 60s interrupted by extreme cold, including two separate periods that dropped as low as 10 degrees, one to start the year and another mid-month. The lowest temperature of the year occurred on the 17th (7 degrees) following a five-day period in which snow was recorded on four days and totaled 2.5". February was marked by excessive rainfall totaling 13.43" (the wettest February on record by over 2") and 19 rain days. Despite all the rain, temperatures were also well above average. March was fairly typical for springtime in the Mid-South with temperatures right at average despite some fairly pronounced swings. The month ended drier than average, and perhaps well below average considering that over two-thirds of the month's rain occurred on two days.

April was remarkably cool overall, ending as the 3rd coolest on record, but that was followed by the warmest May on record - quite the dichotomy! April was also quite wet, but the excess rainfall was completely swallowed up by a large deficit in May. June continued the hot/dry trend with multiple days reaching the mid 90s. It seemed summer started early in 2018!

July was fairly typical (a.k.a. HOT with multiple days in the mid 90s) with slightly above normal rainfall at Memphis International Airport, though it varied fairly widely due to the scattered nature of summertime thunderstorms. The dog days of summer continued in August with temperatures that averaged just slightly below normal and precipitation that was below the average for a normally dry month. Summer finally broke after the Labor Day, as the 90s departed and pleasant weather appeared. Overall, September was a bit warmer than usual with precipitation near average.

However, as October arrived, summer made one last return with multiple days near or just above 90 degrees for the first week of the month. Once again, the rest of the month was a reprieve as fall kicked in for good. November finally saw the Mid-South atmosphere turn cool with nine days that dropped to freezing or below and the earliest snow of more than 0.5" in over 25 years on the 14th. The month ended in the top 10% coolest on record. Finally, the year ended with temperatures that were above normal in December by a couple degrees and precipitation that would have been just below average if over 3" of rain didn't fall on the last two days of 2018. The two-day total ended up being just about what the departure from normal was for the month. For the year, the precipitation total was more than 10" above average and ranked #16 in the wettest years in recorded history.

Severe weather

Severe weather was fairly limited in 2018. Fortunately, the Mid-South recorded just 17 tornadoes, most weak. There was a single EF-2 tornado (in Clay County, AR and Dunklin County, MO on April 24) with the rest rated EF-0 or EF-1. Over half of the year's tornadoes occurred on that evening of February 24 (nine) and all but three occurred north of I-40. None occurred in the eight-county Memphis metropolitan area.

Tracks of all 17 tornadoes in the Mid-South in 2018.
The following represents a statistical recap of the weather for 2018 in Memphis. Another recap of  weather across the Mid-South for 2018, produced by the National Weather Service in Memphis, is available here.

  • October 4 (92°, record high tied)
  • October 16 (50°, record low maximum)
  • November 14 (30°, record low maximum)
  • November 30 (64°, record high minimum)

Comments: After the previous two years ranked in the top 6 warmest on record in Memphis, 2018 was just a bit warmer than the 30-year climate average for temperature, and ranked in the top 25% warmest (tied for 34th) in the 145-year historical record at Memphis. 89 days saw high temperatures at or above 90 degrees (12th most on record). 48 days experienced freezing or sub-freezing temperatures.

The year started on a roller coaster with brutal cold around New Year's Day and another very cold spell at mid-month, both which saw lows drop to 10° or colder. However, between and just after these spells, temperatures reached the mid 60s. Moving into spring, April was the third coldest on record, but the switch flipped in May, which ended as the warmest May on record, and remained hot into early summer. The period May-July was 3rd warmest on record. (June was the 12th warmest on record.) September also ranked in the top 25 warmest on record, while November was very cool, ranking 13 coolest.

Temperatures for the year (lows/highs) are plotted in dark blue against the normals (brown), record highs (red) and record lows (light blue).  Where the dark blue extends above or below the brown indicates temperatures above or below normal, respectively.

Precipitation
Monthly total: 64.15" (10.47" above average)
Days with measurable precipitation: 137 (29.3 days above average)
Days with 1"+ precipitation: 19 (1.6 days above average)
Wettest day: 3.12" (February 28)

Total Snowfall: 3.1" (0.7" below average)
Days with a trace or more snowfall: 9 (6.2 above average)
Days with 1" or more snowfall: 1 (0.2 below average)
Greatest snow depth (6am CST): 2" (January 16)

Records set or tied: The month of February (13.43") was the wettest on record. Snowfall of 0.6" on November 14 was the most that early in the year since 1991. Daily record included:

  • February 28 (3.12")
  • April 14 (3.02" - tie)

Comments: Overall, 2018 ended well above average for precipitation, the 16th wettest year in the 147-year record, or just outside the top 10%. Nineteen days had an inch or more of liquid precipitation; six days had more than 2" (nine is the record).

The year was led by February, which ranked #1 for that month. April was also wet, ranking in the top 25. Summer was a see-saw precipitation-wise with June and August ranked in the top 50 driest and July and September in the top 35 wettest. Fall was generally near normal, while December was wet, particularly the end of the month, ending 16th wettest in the 147-year record. Snowfall totaled just over 3" with perhaps the most notable snow being the 0.6" that occurred on November 14, the most snow that early in the season in over 25 years. The other 2.5" occurred in a very cold five-day period in mid-January, with four of the five days recording snowfall.

Precipitation accumulation for 2018 is plotted as the dark green line, compared with a normal year in brown. Precipitation was near normal until a very wet spell in the latter half of February (two of the three wettest days of the year were in the last week of February). From then on, precipitation remained well above average. The surplus was reduced a bit in the summer months, but continued wet spells in fall and early winter resulted the year ending more than 10" above average.

Memphis, TN Annual Climate Summary for 2017

2017 Annual Recap

Overall, 2017 was very warm, the sixth warmest in Memphis recorded history, and generally remained below normal precipitation-wise for the year outside of a few wet spells.

During the year, there were two major weather events. The first was the "Tom Lee Storm," a derecho that struck Memphis on Memorial Day weekend, knocking over the statue of Tom Lee on the Mississippi Riverfront and resulting in massive power outages across the metro due to wind that topped out over 100 mph.

The Tom Lee Memorial Statue lies in pieces after severe windstorm on May 27 blew through the city, less than an hour after Memphis in May's #901Fest ended. Photo credit: Joe Birch.

The second was the the passage of the remnants of Tropical Storm Harvey over the Mid-South on August 31, producing record rainfall and very gusty wind, as well as as handful of tornadoes in the region, mainly over northeast MS. Overall, the Mid-South recorded 27 tornadoes for the year, most weak, while only two occurred in the greater metro: an EF-0 in Tipton County near Covington on April 30 and an EF-0 in Marshall County near Red Banks on June 22. Neither produced any injuries or deaths.

Memphis, TN Annual Climate Summary for 2016

2016 Annual Recap

Overall, 2016 was very warm (only 0.1° short of the all-time warmest, in fact) and alternated between abnormally wet (especially in the spring) and drought (in the fall).

The year started off with a roller coaster January featuring both severe weather and the only winter weather event of 2016. A mix of snow and ice occurred on the 22nd with the official report being 0.3" of snow, though up to 3" fell in Tipton County.

NWS-Memphis graphic showing approximate accumulations from the January 22 winter storm. (NWS-Memphis)
After temperatures were near average in January, the warmth of 2016 started in February with temperatures and precipitation both above normal. The month of March was particularly eventful with multiple heavy rain events leading to flash flooding, as well as a Tornado Warning on the 13th. Temperatures were also well above normal. April continued the trend of above normal temperatures. During the month of May, which typically commences summertime warmth, unusually cool temperatures were experienced mid-month with highs in the 60s and only a couple days above 90°. Only a few spotty severe weather events occurred during the prime severe weather season of April and May.

June began a period of very warm weather and dry conditions that would continue through the summer and into the fall. The month featured 22 days above 90° and was the seventh warmest June on record. Drought conditions began to show up in north MS. July and August continued the hot trend with both months ranking in the top 10 warmest on record and the three-month summer term ending as fourth warmest on record. In fact, persistent heat is best reflected by the fact that a new record was set for consecutive days with low temperatures at or above 70° (83 days ending September 1). Precipitation was fairly abundant locally during July and August though drought conditions continued in north MS.

September continued to be very warm with 20 of the first 25 days of the month above 90° and the month ending as second warmest on record. That was followed by the warmest October on record. Both months were also very dry with drought conditions in north MS spreading north into the metro and most precipitation falling on just a few days. Fall ended with November ending as the eighth warmest on record and the September-November period being the warmest fall on record, as well as the sixth driest. Precipitation in November was sparse, resulting in severe drought conditions across the metro.
A comparison of drought conditions on November 29, when severe drought covered the metro, and January 3, when it was greatly alleviated due to late November and December precipitation. Can't see the animation? Click here. (UNL Drought Monitor)
Winter began with a wide variety of weather in December - warm spells separated by Arctic blasts and stormy periods that included some severe weather reports in the middle (wind damage, funnel clouds) and end (hail) of the month.

Comments: 2016 was the 2nd warmest year on record with a 65.8° average annual temperature, finishing 0.1° short of the record set in 2012. June-August (meteorological summer) was the 4th warmest on record (84.3°) and September-November (meteorological fall) was the warmest on record (69.5°). In addition, June (83.2°) was 7th warmest, July (85.0°) was tied for 8th warmest, August (84.6°) was 10th warmest, September (80.5°) was 4th warmest, October (70.7°) was 1st warmest, and November (57.4°) was 8th warmest on record. The six-month stretch of top 10 warmest months is remarkable and resulted in the June-November period (76.9°) being the warmest such stretch on record.

Temperatures for the year (lows/highs) are plotted in dark blue against the normals (brown), record highs (red) and record lows (light blue).  Where the dark blue extends above or below the brown indicates temperatures above or below normal, respectively.

Records set or tied: Three daily records were set in 2016: March 9 (4.53"), March 10 (3.43"), March 31 (2.42", tied).

Comments: 2016 was the 18th wettest year in 146 years of record-keeping, boosted by the 4th wettest meteorological spring (March-May, 27.24"). Countering that, meteorological fall (September-November, 4.45") was the 6th driest on record. March (16.20") was the 4th wettest on record, aided by three daily records during the month, and July (8.02") the 8th wettest.

Precipitation accumulation for 2016 is plotted as the dark green line, compared with a normal year in brown. Precipitation was near normal until a very wet early March. After that point, it remained near average with slight variations, through August before a lengthy dry spell that resulted in drought conditions heading into early winter. Much of the positive departure from normal resulted from deluges in early spring.
